Description:
Since its inception in 1987, the Visual Arts Competition (VAC), run by Directories Philippines Corporation (DPC) and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), has been a celebration of creativity and artistic expression among students.
During the first 25 years of the competition, VAC organizers collaborated with fine arts colleges in mounting preliminary in-school painting or mixed-media competitions, employing each year’s designated theme. At that time, the top three artworks from each participating fine arts school were submitted as each institution’s official entries to the final phase of the VAC.
From the pool of school entries, the VAC board of judges, consisting of distinguished visual artists, selected the grand prize winner, which was featured in the Metro Manila telephone directories published by DPC and PLDT. For many years, the second to fourth prize winning entries were featured on the covers of other major phone directories nationwide.
From 2011 to 2015, the VAC shifted to the medium of digital photography to broaden the range of participants, beyond fine arts students.
In celebration of the competition’s milestone year, VAC 30 is going back to the medium of painting in collaboration with fine arts schools across the country.
Open to students, ages 18-24, VAC 30 encourages them to interpret the year’s VAC theme in oil or acrylic. In addition to the prestige of getting featured in DPC and PLDT’s print and online directories, the top prize winners will also be awarded trophies and cash prizes or donations for the student artists and their respective schools, keeping with the VAC tradition.
